Both, Sam and Cash were let go when Failbetter down-sized at the beginning of 2018 due to troubles during the Sunless Skies development. Cash is a freelance writer since and he also worked on Disco Elysium. For Sam, I believe this is the first game he's publishing since leaving Failbetter. Sunless Skies is a Gothic Horror roleplay game with a focus on exploration and exquisite storytelling, for PC, Mac and Linux. Praise for Sunless Skies “This is a game about stories that has a knack of producing really good ones – when you’re doing well, and especially when you’re doing badly.” – EDGE, 9/10 review.

Story description[edit | edit source]
An engineer has made an alarming discovery. An undetonated shell from a recent battle has penetrated your hull and lodged in a cavity under the plating.
It's still there, buried in a nest of pipes.

Location: The High Wilderness
Area: The Sky

Disarm it yourself A steady hand. Nerves of steel. Game note: Risk your Hull. |
| Failed event | Advanced alteration value probably needs examination. |
A mistake Did your hand slip? Or did your engine jolt as it struck some stellar debris?Regardless, a pipe breaks, jetting steam over the shell. Its casing quickly becomes too hot to touch. You order the area evacuated. The detonation, when it comes, is deafening.

Gently does it Very carefully, you extract the shell, convey it to a hatch, and give it to the skies. A you steam away, it explodes with a flash and a crack, as you steam away, pretty as a Jubilation Day firework in the rear windows.
| |||
Partial success event (5%) | |||
A close call In the end you have to cut through a section of piping to clear the way. The shell begins to emit a sizzling noise.Hurrying it to an exterior hatch, you fling it out. It spins away into the mists. You wait for several long moments, but there is no detonation. A dud.
| |||
Order your crew to remove it |
| Failed event | Special is calculated as follows: 40+(Terror/2) * 1.67 Advanced alteration value probably needs examination. |
The detonation They have been working on the shell for a taut half-hour when an explosion rattles your locomotive. The engineers had erected spare plating to contain the blast, minimising its effect on your locomotive, if not themselves. Not everyone managed to get clear.
| |||
Successful event | |||
Delegation You let your engineers work. After several tense hours they bring you the components of the shell, safely dismantled. You write each of them a letter of commendation.
| |||
Leave it alone It's only a matter of time before it explodes. But perhaps you can make it back to port in time. | The waiting game You order the area sealed off and command the crew to return to their duties. They go, exchanging nervous glances at the thought of your deadly new cargo. Back in the captain's chair, you set a course. The clock ticks too loudly. Game note: If you can reach a region's central port before the shell explodes, you can pay to have it safely removed.
